India Post to release Postcards on Samantwadi Toys

Topic: Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.


Context

  • To mark the occasion of 151 years of postcards in India, Maharashtra Circle of India Post will release picture postcards on 'Sawantwadi Toys' on October 1.
  • The postcard, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech about the country's ability to become a "toy hub", will be released by HC Agrawal, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle of India Post.

About the toys

  • Sawantwadi toys refer to handmade works of art made of wood in Sawantwadi a town in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, an Indian state.
  • Sawantwadi is considered to be India's largest market for wooden models of fruits and wooden toys.
  • Most of these toys are made in the village of Kolgaon in Sawantwadi Taluka these toys are made from the wood of the Indian Coral tree (Erythrina Variegate).
  • Craftsmen who make these toys belong to the Chittari community who came to Sawantwadi from Karwar and Goa.
  • It is reported that the makers of these toys face the challenge of competition from mass produced cheap Chinese products.
  • A news story dated May, 2013, bemoans the lack of state support to this traditional art form.

Indian Coast Guard ship named after Kanaklata Barua commissioned

Context

  • Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned ICGS Kanaklata Barua, a fast patrol vessel (FPV), in Kolkata.
  • ICG ships are named after women freedom fighters of the country and the ICG had an FPV named after Kanaklata, which was decommissioned in 2017 after 20 years of service from Port Blair as its base.

Background

  • The new vessel will replace the decommissioned vessel.
  • ICGS Kanaklata Barua has been built by the Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

Highlights

  • It is the fifth and final ship in the series of FPVs for the Indian Coast Guard and this is also the 105th vessel delivered by the defence PSU shipyard.
  • The FPVs has been entirely designed by the GRSE central design office.
  • These ships are designed to achieve speeds exceeding 34 knots with an endurance of more than 1,500 nautical miles.
  • These ships are also fitted with 40/60 Gun as the main armament and have improved habitability features with fully air-conditioned modular accommodation for 35 personnel.
  • The 49-metre-long ship is designed to carry one high-speed rigid inflatable boat (RIB) and one Gemini boat for swift boarding, and search and rescue operations.

Ambedkar Social Innovation & Incubation Mission

Context

  • Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment launched the Ambedkar Social Innovation and Incubation Mission (ASIIM) under Venture Capital Fund for SCs.
  • The Ministry of Social Justice had launched the Venture Capital Fund for SCs (VCF-SC) in 2014-15 with a view to developing entrepreneurship amongst the SC/Divyang youth and to enable them to become ‘job-givers’. 

Background

  • The objective of this fund is to provide concessional finance to the entities of the SC entrepreneurs.
  • Under this fund, 117 companies promoted by SC entrepreneurs have been sanctioned financial assistance to set up business ventures.

About the mission

  • Ministry launched Ambedkar Social Innovation and Incubation Mission” to create start-up companies headed by Dalit techies.
  • Under it, 1,000 SC youth will be identified in the next four years with start-up ideas through the Technology Business Incubators in various higher educational institutions.
  • They will be funded 30 lakh rupees in three years as equity funding to translate their start-up ideas into commercial ventures. 
  • Successful ventures would further qualify for venture funding of up to five Crore rupees from the Venture Capital Fund for SCs.

Govt to execute communication network project for Army in forward areas

Focus: GS3.

Topic: Awareness in the fields of IT, Space, Computers, robotics, nano-technology, bio-technology and issues relating to intellectual property rights.


Context

The Cabinet Committee on Security has cleared an ambitious project under which a highly secure communication network will be set up for the Indian Army in strategically key forward locations, including along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), at a cost of Rs 7,796 crore, officials said.

Background

  • The project will be rolled out by government-owned company ITI within three years, they said, adding that the contract for its implementation was signed with the telecom entity.
  • The project will provide better "survivability, responsiveness and high bandwidth" in any operational scenario and enhance the communication coverage of the network in areas closer to forward areas, including along the LAC.

About the significance

  • The project will also help provide secure network coverage in areas along the Line of Control (LoC) and the international border with Pakistan.
  • In order to meet the long pending demand of the Indian Army, the Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the proposal for establishment of Army Static Switched Communication Network (ASCON) Phase IV Network.
  • The project would augment the communication network of the Indian Army in the sensitive forward operational areas which in turn will provide a major boost to the operational preparedness especially keeping in view the current situation at the LAC.
  • The project is also a big opportunity for the public sector to showcase its capability and provide an impetus to the Indian economy and will be a step in the direction of achieving the goal of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India).
  • With approximately 80 per cent indigenous content, the project will provide a boost to the Indian industry.
  • The project will lead to upgradation of the existing 'Asynchronous Transfer Mode Technology' to Internet Protocol (IP)/ Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology.
  • Optical Fibre Cable (OFC), Microwave Radio and Satellite will be used as communication media.
  • The project involves execution of civil works, laying of OFC, tower construction, etc.
  • And with utilisation of local resources, hiring of manpower, it would generate employment opportunities especially to the people in remote border areas, support and boost rural economy, assist in upliftment of the local economies, provide skill development during the prolonged period of execution and maintenance of the network.

‘Tribes India E-Marketplace’

Minister of Tribal Affairs Arjun Munda virtually launched India’s largest handicraft and organic products marketplace- Tribes India E-Marketplace on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

Background

  • Keeping in line with the vision of the Prime Minister of making India Aatmanirbhar and self-reliant ,this path breaking initiative of TRIFED  will showcase the produce and handicrafts of tribal enterprises from across the country.
  • It will help them market their products directly.

Highlights

  • On this occasion, Mr Arjun Munda also flagged off several other TRIFED initiatives that are aimed to support tribal brethren.
  • These include the inauguration of Tribes India’s 123rd and 124th outlets in Rishikesh and Kolkata, inclusion of new tribal product ranges from the states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and partnership of TRIFED and Tribes India with Amazon in their Seller Flex program.
  • Mr Munda also launched Pakur Honey which is 100 per cent natural honey , gathered by Santhal Tribals from Pakur, Jharkhand.

Govt notifies rules to protect people who help accident victims

Context

  • The people helping the road accidents victims on the spot can no longer be put through legal quagmire at the hospital or later by law enforcement authorities.
  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) notified the rules for the protection of Good Samaritans.

Background

  • The rules provide for the rights of good samaritan which include that the the good samaritan be treated respectfully without any discrimination on the grounds of religion, nationality, caste or sex.
  • No police officer or any other person shall compel a Good Samaritan to disclose his/her name, identity, address or any such other personal details.
  • However, he may voluntarily choose to disclose the same.

Highlights

  • The rules also provide that every public and private hospital shall publish a charter in Hindi, English and vernacular language, at the entrance or other conspicuous location, and on their website, stating the rights of Good Samaritans.
  • If a person has voluntarily agreed to become a witness in the case in which he has acted as a Good Samaritan, he shall be examined in accordance with the provisions of the new law.
  • The notified Rules fall short of providing any accountability mechanism if the rights of Good Samaritans are violated. In the Supreme Court Judgment, there were 3 key points to ensure accountability of police and medical professionals however these 3 clauses are not part of the final rules notified by MoRTH.
  • For instance, Supreme Court Judgment ensured action against “public officials who coerce or intimidate Good Samaritans to reveal his or her name and personal details" and “appropriate action against public and private hospitals by concerned authorities in case of non-compliance"; whereas the Rules are silent on it. We urge the Government to notify these clauses to ensure compressive protection to Good Samaritans."

Govt announces state mourning on Oct 4 as mark of respect to Kuwait's Amir

  • The Centre announced one-day state mourning on October 4 across India as a mark of respect to Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away on September 29.
  • The national flag will be flown at half mast on all government buildings on that day.

Highlights

  • A statement by the Ministry of Home Affairs said Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, passed away on September 29.
  • "As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day's State Mourning on October 4, 2020 throughout India," the statement said.
  • The national flag will be flown at half mast on all buildings throughout India where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day, it said.
