IES Exam 2020 - Engineering Services Exam

IES Exam 2020 - Indian Engineering Services exam is conducted by UPSC to recruit engineers for various government departments in India. The IES exam 2020 is conducted in 3 stages - IES prelims, IES mains exam and IES Personality Test. Candidates qualifying IES Prelims exam will be eligible to take the IES Mains exam which will be conducted on June 28, 2020. UPSC has declared IES Prelims Result on February 20, 2020 in online mode.

IES Mains exam will be conducted in offline mode. Candidates who have qualified the prelims exam will be able to download the admit card of the mains exam three weeks prior to the exam. The candidates who will qualify the mains exam will be able to take the personality test.

Nationality/Category

Candidates should be a Citizen of India, A subject of Nepal, A subject of Bhutan, A Tibetan Refugee who is permanently staying in India until January 01, 1962.

Indian origin individuals from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates must have completed the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on August 1, 2020. Candidates should not be born earlier than August 2, 1989, and not later than August 1, 1999.

  • Engineering degree holder from a University recognized under the Act of the Central or State Legislature in India.

  • Engineering students who have cleared Sections A & B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India).
  • Candidates who have secured an Engineering degree or diploma from a foreign University or College and Institution recognized by the Government of India.
  • Candidates who have cleared the Graduate Membership Exam of the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India).
  • Candidates who have cleared the Associate Membership Exam Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India.

IES Application Form 2020

IES applicants need to check the eligibility criteria for admission to the Engineering Services Examination. The admissions at various stages of the IES exam are strictly provisional and are subject to confirmation only if the candidate meets the specified eligibility conditions.

Application Withdrawal Facility 
The exam conducting authorities has released the IES application form 2020 withdrawal facility on October 22. Candidates can withdraw their application till October 28 (6 pm) by providing all the required information.

Time Window for Application Submission

The online application process for IES 2020 began from 25th September 2019 to 15th October 2019. Candidates can apply online through UPSC's official website.

IES Selection Procedure 2020

IES ESE 2020 Selection Procedure is conducted in the following three stages:

Stage 1 - IES Prelims Exam 

The Engineering Preliminary exam is the screening test to qualify for the IES mains exam. The questions asked in the IES prelims exam are objective questions (MCQs). In the prelims exam, there will be two papers, one is General Studies for 200 marks and the other is engineering paper (according to candidates choice - Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Electronics, and Telecommunications) for 300 marks.

Stage 2 - IES Mains Exam

Candidates who are qualified prelims will appear for the IES mains exam. In the IES mains exam, there are two conventional papers based on the candidate's engineering discipline - Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Electronics, and Telecommunications. In the IES mains exam, UPSC tests the candidates engineering knowledge deeply. 300 marks for each paper.

Stage 3 - IES Interview/ Personality Test

The Interview/Personality test which is attended by candidates whose name appears in the merit list prepared on the basis of the Mains.

The outcome will be based on reports analysis or marks scored in the final round or through an aggregate evaluation of the three rounds.

Nature of work of IES Officers

IES officials perform various job roles, spanning across technical and managerial work delivery for the GOI. The initial designation an IES officer holds is of Assistant Executive Engineer and can grow in the hierarchy to become a Chairman or a Managing Director. The starting salary of an IES officer is good and depends upon their position and the criticality of their role under the GOI.

Career Path of Engineers in IES

After having gained experience of 3-4 years, an IES official is given a promotion to the next designation of an Engineer, Work Manager or Director. Post eight years of IES service, an individual is officially designated as Joint Director/Deputy General Manager.

Post that, the Joint Director is eligible for the position of Chief Engineer/Joint General Manager-level 2 IES officer. Mostly, engineers with at least 20 years of experience are in consideration for the post of Chief Engineer/Additional General Manager and after 30 years an individual is entitled to the position of Senior General Manager/Engineer-in-Chief. The best IES performers with experience of over 34 years are eligible for designation of CM or MD of a governmental unit or organisation.

After the 7th pay commission, the IES salary is like an IAS Officer's salary. Now, the IES officers are entitled to additional benefits and a higher salary and many allowances as well.

NOTE (1) :

(a) In respect of the Technical Service mentioned above, the total amount of myopia (including the cylinder) shall not exceed 4,00 D. Total amount of Hypermetropia (including the cylinder) shall not exceed+400D : provided that in case a candidate in respect of the Services classified as Technical (other than the Services under the Ministry of Railways) is found unfit on the grounds of high myopia the matter shall be referred to special boards of three Ophthalmologists to declare whether this myopia is Pathological or not. In case it is not pathological, the candidate shall be declared fit provided he fulfils the visual requirements otherwise.

(b) In every case of myopia funds examination should be carried out and the results recorded. In the event of any pathological condition being present which is likely to be progressive and affect the efficiency of the candidate, he shall be declared unfit.

(c) Radial Keratotomy/Laser Correction etc. shall be considered as a disqualification for appointment in Railway Technical Services (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics). Permitted correction for conforming to prescribed visual standards is spectacles only.

NOTE (2): The testing of colour vision shall be essential in respect of the Technical Services as mentioned above. Colour perception should be graded into higher and lower grade depending upon the size of the aperture in the lantern as described in the table below
